All students at St. Peter Chanel Primary School learn Japanese as a Language other than English (LOTE) with a specialist Japanese teacher. The program helps students understand the language by developing communication skills, expanding their intercultural awareness, appreciation and understanding. 

The Victorian Curriculum 2 acts as a guide for all lessons planned within the Japanese program. The junior curriculum approach to teaching Japanese is based on oral learning skills, which are achieved through various activities such as songs, cultural demonstrations, listening games and stories, speaking sessions, and communication activities. In the senior levels, students participate in structured routines and rich language activities and start learning more complex interactions and grammatical structures of the Japanese language. Students utilise their learned language skills by demonstrating oral and written forms of Japanese.

A Japanese Cultural Day is also celebrated.  On this day, students are immersed in Japanese culture and engage in many hands-on activities designed to enrich and inspire their Japanese learning experience.
